About us & vacancies

Vrijwillige schippers

Stichting De Leidse Rederij is a volunteer organization of more than one hundred enthusiastic skippers, guides, hosts and wives and naval technicians, who have a warm heart for former Leiden.

Leiden is a real water city with 28 kilometers of picturesque canals and green moats.

Along old waterways we find many places of interest in the pleasant city center such as Leiden University, many museums, monumental buildings, beautiful courtyards, old alleys and traces of a glorious past. This treasure trove of knowledge, culture and science inspired us to to found a Leiden Shipping Company to show the splendor of a historic city from the water.

We started with a small fleet that has now grown into a shipping company with twelve characteristic ships.

Our guides (skippers) are happy to take you along with the beautiful stories from Leiden's turbulent past. Our team knows many ins and outs of Leiden's water history, so no cruise is the same. This way u learn a lot about the 'city of discoveries' in a fun way.

All skippers are well trained and in possession of a navigation license with a VHF certificate. Our fleet meets all the requirements set by the Shipping Inspectorate for commercial vessels and is equipped with the necessary rescue equipment. Our objective is to keep old and classic ships in service that fit in with the historic cityscape. With this we want to give interested passengers a good impression of the history of Leiden as a water city.

Since 2014, the De Leidse Rederij Foundation has been recognized as a training company by the Cooperation Organization for Vocational Education in Business (SBB).

We perform all our services under the CBRB/VNPR Passenger transport conditions for inland shipping. The Leiden Rederij Foundation is affiliated with Royal BLN-Schuttevaer.

Our advice? Sailing is better than you think...
